On April 20th, 1914, in Ludlow Colorado, the Colorado National Guard, reinforced by guards from the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company, opened fire with rifles and machine guns on a camp of 1,200 miners and their families. The miners were on strike for redress of grievances concerning a failure of enforcement of worker protections such as laws stipulating an 8 hour work day. Approximately 24 people were killed in the attack, including 11 children between the ages of 3 months and 11 years. By the end of the strike the death toll reached 75.
